Self-Regulation

October 14, 2011

For several decades now, professional planners in Ontario have been considering the desirability and possibility of becoming a fully self-regulated profession. OPPI’s Strategic Plan in 2007 authorized Council to “Investigate the feasibility of regulating the planning profession through provincial legislation.”

In late 2008, Council appointed members to a Professional Practice Advisory Group (“PPAG”), which met with OPPI’s legal counsel as well as a government relations firm….

Thus begins a “green paper” that was endorsed by OPPI Council at its May 2011 meeting.

The “Planning for the Future” changes that were recently (and overwhelmingly) approved by the membership of both CIP and OPPI have set the stage for this new initiative. The adoption of consistent, modern, national membership standards enables and strengthens the case for self-regulation.

As the largest provincial affiliate, OPPI and its members clearly have a leadership role to play moving forward: to forge and define a new identity and role for Canadian professional planners.

District representatives will be organizing meetings to foster dialogue about self-regulation—describe the issues, answer questions and discuss what the initiative means for the profession and to individual planning professionals. Stay tuned for a meeting near you.

This webpage will be the source of continually-updated resources, links, and presentations about self-regulation. Presentations, FAQs, questions and comments will be posted as the dialogue evolves. Check back often, send your questions, offer comments, assistance, and suggestions online or to:
