Professor Leonard Gertler, FCIP
A leading planner in Ontario, Professor Gertler was educated at Queen's, Toronto, and McGill in Politics, Economics and Physical Planning. He had over 40 years of experience in Community Development, Urban and Regional Planning, and Management. His accomplishments were many including being the founding director of the school of planning at the University of Waterloo. He is perhaps best known for his role in developing the Niagara Escarpment Plan. His impact on the development of this plan was such that in 2006, the year following his death, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the Loree Forest, located on the Escarpment, was renamed the Len Gertler Memorial Loree Forest in honour of his work. Professor Gertler was also well known and respected for his many publications on planning and related themes. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners in January of 1981 in recognition of his lifetime achievements as a Planner.
In 2007, OPPI announced the creation of a new category for the Excellence in Planning Awards, the Leonard Gertler Award of Distinction. This special award was named in his honour and recognizes work of such significance that it substantially impacts people in the Province of Ontario and is deserving of special acknowledgement. The award will be given out for the first time at the OPPI 's Lifestyle Conference taking place from October 3rd to the 5th in the Town of the Blue Mountains.
