Guidelines for Hiring Planning Consultants
Before you hire a planner, write out a set of specifications that describes:
- the results you expect
- background information on the project
- the resources you will make available
- the services the planner will provide
- the schedule/timelines
- the budget
- how the planner's work will be evaluated
Draw up a list of potential consultants. Ask each firm or individual to prepare a proposal that corresponds to your specifications. Review these proposals, looking for evidence that the consultant or firm:
- understands the project
- has the necessary skills to complete the work
- can meet your deadlines
- can work within your budget
- is able to manage and organize the work
The contract you draw up should contain your specifications and the proposal, with any necessary modifications.
