Guidelines for Hiring Planning Consultants

Before you hire a planner, write out a set of specifications that describes:

  • the results you expect
  • background information on the project
  • the resources you will make available
  • the services the planner will provide
  • the schedule/timelines
  • the budget
  • how the planner's work will be evaluated

Draw up a list of potential consultants. Ask each firm or individual to prepare a proposal that corresponds to your specifications. Review these proposals, looking for evidence that the consultant or firm:

  • understands the project
  • has the necessary skills to complete the work
  • can meet your deadlines
  • can work within your budget
  • is able to manage and organize the work

The contract you draw up should contain your specifications and the proposal, with any necessary modifications.

OPPI's Guidelines for Hiring Planning Consultants describes the process in more detail.
