Urban Design for Planners
In the last 20 years planning education has largely missed the urban design component. There is a lot more emphasis in today’s planning practice for urban design arising from the agenda of sustainability, healthy communities, neighbourhood quality, the emergence of more compact urban forms, mixed use, transit oriented development, reconsideration of local character and heritage. At the same time recent changes in the way planning is practiced in Ontario resulting from the Places to Grow Act and the new Planning Act lead towards the integration of urban design as a practice and method in the planning process.
This course will respond to the needs of practicing planners in government, consulting, and other types of employment. It balances the theoretical aspects with intense practical aspects arising from the wide experience of the faculty. This course will strive to intensively use best practice examples particularly from Canada and Ontario.
This course covers:
- Urban Design History and Theory
- Urban Design Practice
- Urban Design for Sustainable and Healthy Development
- Urban Design Methods and Tools
- Design Practice Workshop
