Membership for Planners from Other Countries

If you hold corporate membership in the Canadian Institute of Planning as an International Member, and are moving to Ontario, then OPPI may accept you as a Member. You must be a Member in good standing with CIP, and have paid to it all outstanding fees. Then you can request in writing the transfer of your member file from CIP to OPPI.

If you hold full corporate member status in one of the following organizations:

  1. The Royal Town Planning Institute (Great Britain),
  2. The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP),
  3. The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), or
  4. The New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI),

then OPPI may accept you as a Member. You must submit an application for Provisional membership in OPPI with documentation to the Registrar showing that you have fulfilled the requirements for full corporate membership in the organization (copy of your certificate from the organization and a copy of the receipt for your yearly fees). This documentation must correspond to the published requirements of the organization on record in the OPPI office.

CIP and OPPI are in communication with planning institutes in other countries, and the list noted above may expand to include them in the future.

If you apply for membership in OPPI (and CIP), you shall be required to satisfactorily complete a one-question examination set by CIP on the Canadian Planning system, before taking the OPPI Registration Examination (Exam A) for full corporate membership.

Provisional Membership

If you are a "Candidate Member" of the above-noted organizations, then OPPI may accept you as a Provisional Member. You must submit documentation to the Registrar showing that you have fulfilled the requirements for candidate (or equivalent) membership in the organization.
